Experiences
of Exile.
In the summer of 1962, almost 800,000 French settlers fled Algeria for exile in France, in the biggest mass migration to Europe since 1945. As Europe witnesses another exodus across the Mediterranean, this project captures the experiences of those who arrived in France, and asks what it means to be a colonizer… a settler… a migrant… an exile… a refugee...
The project aims to enhance public understanding of migration and integration by investigating an historical precedent for mass migration across the Mediterranean and by working with local government and groups in central Scotland resettling those who have experienced displacement from Syria.
